Adult Migrant English Program

Access to free English language courses to help you settle in Australia.

About the program

If eligible, you can get up to 510 hours of free English language education. You can access the program until whichever comes first:

  • for 5 years from your visa start date, or
  • until you understand functional English

Who can join

You can join the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) if:

  • you speak little or no English
  • you're 18 years or older, or
  • you’re 15 to 17 years and not attending school, and
  • you're a permanent resident or hold an eligible temporary visa (a list of eligible temporary visas is on the Department of Education and Training website).

How long you have

To join the program you must register, start and finish your course in the time limits below. The limits apply from whichever is later:

  • your visa start date, or
  • the date you arrived in Australia

If you're 18 or older you must:

  • register with an AMEP provider within 6 months
  • start your course within 12 months, and
  • complete your course within 5 years

If you're younger than 18 you must:

  • register with an AMEP provider within 12 months
  • start your course within 12 months, and
  • complete your course within 5 years

There are over 250 course locations across Australia.

Child care assistance

If you have children under school age, you may get free child care while you attend class. Your AMEP service provider may arrange this.

If your children are school age, you may get Jobs, Education and Training Child Care Fee Assistance.
