You should register an intent to claim for the Assistance for Isolated Children Scheme as soon as possible.
Who can claim
If you have primary or joint responsibility for the student you can claim Assistance for Isolated Children.
In some cases, we accept a claim from someone else if:
- the student lives with, or is in the care of, a foster parent, or
- the student lives in an organisation that has full financial responsibility for the accommodation provided by a non-government student's carer
Only one parent or guardian can claim.
If you have more than one student in your care, submit a claim for each student.

Register an intent to claim by calling us if you're contacting us within 4 weeks before 31 December of the study year.

Supporting forms and documentation
You may need to provide:
- proof of the student’s age
- evidence to support your claim, and
- details of the student’s study
Provide any supporting documentation requested on the form when you submit the claim form. If you can't, submit the claim form as soon as possible. Provide the supporting forms and documentation when you can.

Medical Statement–Student Special Needs
To claim Assistance for Isolated Children under the students with special needs criteria you need to provide evidence from a medical practitioner. Download the Assistance for Isolated Children Medical Statement – Student Special Needs form.
Complete this form with your doctor or specialist, if relevant, and attach it to the Claim for Assistance for Isolated Children form.
Application for Short Term Boarding Allowance
If you've already submitted the Assistance for Isolated Children form for the student and want to claim Boarding Allowance for additional boarding during the year, download the Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) Application for Short Term Boarding Allowance form.
The sooner we get your supporting form or documents, the sooner we can process your claim.

If you're eligible for Assistance for Isolated Children, we'll tell you when your payment starts and how much you get.
Payment can start from 1 January of the study year if you qualify for the payment from that date.
