These 3 steps will help you get a student payment.
When you begin a new chapter in life, you need to know how to do many things. You’ll need to know how to:
- find the best coffee in your area that soothes your soul
- keep your succulents and indoor plants alive
- claim a student payment.
We can’t help you with the first 2, but we can with the third.
1. Get ready to claim
You’ve found out you’re eligible for a student payment so you’ll need a myGov account linked to Centrelink. If you don’t have both accounts, you’ll need to set them up.
If you’re having trouble claiming online, you can either:
You’ll also need to get some supporting documents ready to help answer some of the questions in the claim.
2. Make your claim
Sign in to myGov and go to Centrelink. Select Getting started and answer all the questions.
You’ll also need some supporting documents to help answer some of the questions.
Each screen has information to help you complete the claim. Once complete, submit your claim.
3. Track your claim
Once you claim you’ll get a receipt telling you:
- your claim was submitted
- the ID number of your claim
- the date we estimate your claim will be completed.

You may be able to get a student payment if you’re studying at university, TAFE or doing an apprenticeship.
To get a student payment you must study an approved course. Find out how to check if a course has approval.
