Claiming a student payment: identify your identity documents

27 November 2017

Knowing what documents you need to confirm your identity can be confusing. Let us guide you through it.

Before you claim a student payment you may need to show us some documents to confirm your identity. The documents we need from you will depend on your situation.

New claimant

You’re a new claimant if you don’t have a Customer Reference Number (CRN) and haven’t registered for online services.

You’ll need to come into a service centre or Agent to confirm your identity. Contact us if you can’t get to a service centre, or an Agent.

You’ll need to provide acceptable ID with your photo on it to register for a Centrelink online account.

Existing claimant without an online account

You’re an existing claimant if you used to get a payment from Centrelink. This might have been a payment your parents got for you.

You’ll need to provide acceptable ID with your photo on it to register for a Centrelink online account and claim online. You can do this at a service centre or Agent.

Visit confirm your identity for more information about the other documents you’ll need to show us and what we’ll accept.

Existing claimant with an online account

If you already have an online account you can claim online. You can submit any remaining identity documents we need as part of your claim through the online service.

If you give us identity documents we can’t accept, we’ll send you a message to your online account. It’ll tell you to confirm your identity in person.

ABSTUDY claimants

You can’t apply for ABSTUDY online. If you claim over the phone or by form there are some documents you might need. You should submit these documents as soon as possible. Read more about claiming ABSTUDY.
