Do you know how to prove your identity before making a student claim? We can guide you through it.

Before you claim a student payment, you’ll need a Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN). You’ll also need a Centrelink online account.

You may also need to confirm your identity. To confirm your identity you need to give us an approved photo ID and 2 other identity documents.

Read more about the documents you need to give us to confirm your identity.

If you’re a new customer

As a new customer you won’t have a CRN.

To get a CRN, you can go to a Centrelink service centre or Agent with approved photo ID. Once you’ve done this, you can create an online account and start your claim.

If you have a CRN

You can create an online account and submit a claim if you have a CRN.You’ll have a CRN if you ever got a Centrelink payment. This includes if your parents ever got a payment for you.

You may need to confirm your identity at a service centre or Agent with approved photo ID.

You can upload any other required documents we ask for in the online claim process.

Contact us if you can’t get to a service centre or Agent.

If you have an online account

If you have a CRN and an online account, you’re ready to start your online claim. You can upload any documents we ask for, including identity documents, in the online claim process.
