From 1 January 2018, you need to confirm your relationship status if you’re a single parent and get income support.
We know families come in all shapes and sizes.
If you’re a single parent on Parenting Payment or Newstart Allowance with dependent children, we’ll send you a letter between January 2018 and November 2021. This letter will ask you to confirm your relationship status and complete a form.
Doing this helps us know if we’re paying you the right amount and stops you from getting a debt.
An independent person – who we call a referee – needs to confirm your current relationship status by completing the form with you
What you need to do
When you get the letter in the mail or in your myGov inbox you need to:
- Download the Verification of Relationship Status form.
- Ask a referee to confirm your current relationship status by completing the form with you.
When you have completed the form, return it within 28 days. You can return the form either:
- online – for more information about how to set up an Online Account or lodge documents online, go to Submit your Centrelink documents online
- by post to:
Department of Human Services
