Help dealing with drug and alcohol misuse and looking for work

1 January 2018

From 1 January 2018, there’ll be a change to help support people with drug or alcohol issues, so they can find work.

Looking for work isn’t always easy and having a drug or alcohol related issue can make it harder. It can be difficult to ask for help, but getting professional support may help you on the path to working again.

The new change means drug and alcohol addiction treatments and interventions may count towards your requirements as a job seeker.

Your employment services provider can tell you more and let you know what support options are available to you. They can also add recovery or rehabilitation to your Job Plan.

This will let you focus on treatment and get the help and support you need.

Next steps

Talk to your employment services provider to find out more. You should also talk with your provider about any issues that make it difficult for you to meet your requirements.

Talk to friends and family. You could also talk to your doctor, other health professional or a telephone helpline.

Check out the Counselling Online website for online text-based counselling. You can also find state-based phone numbers if you prefer to speak to someone over the phone.
