How to avoid an interest charge on your Centrelink debt

How to avoid an interest charge on your Centrelink debt
17 April 2018

To avoid an interest charge, you need to pay back any money you owe us.

We’ll consider your situation and can be flexible with repayments.

You won’t get an interest charge if you:

  • set up a payment arrangement and honour it
  • get a fortnightly Centrelink payment

If you owe us money, we’ll send you a letter to explain why. There are many ways to pay it back. The easiest way to manage or repay your debt is online.

Select Money You Owe from the menu in your Centrelink online account or Centrelink Express Plus Mobile app.

You can register for a Centrelink online account through myGov at any time.

You can also call our Centrelink debt recovery line on 1800 076 072 to set up a payment arrangement or discuss your circumstances if you cannot repay the money you owe at this time.

If you don’t get a payment from us anymore but you owe us money, make sure we have your contact details:

  • sign in to myGov to access your Centrelink online account
  • use the Centrelink Express Plus mobile app, or
  • call our self-service phone line on 136 240
