How long can I keep getting my student payment?
11 November 2019
We can only pay your Youth Allowance or Austudy for a set amount of time. We call this allowable time.
We base allowable time on the minimum time it normally takes to finish your course as a full time student. The time will depend on the payment you get and the length of your course. Read more about allowable time for Youth Allowance or Austudy.
Allowable time may impact you, if you:
- decide to change courses
- have done a Bachelor degree and now want to do a masters
- have to extend your course.
If you run out of allowable time, your payment will stop.
Any study you’ve done for the course will count in your allowable time. We may count previous study in your allowable time. If you’ve done a tertiary course at the same level as your current course, we may count it.
Sometimes things happen beyond your control and you may not be able to finish your course in the allowable time. If this is happens, we may be able extend your allowable time. In these situations, you need to talk to us.
