The PBS helps to keep the cost of prescription medicines low. If you spend a lot of money on medicines you can apply for the PBS Safety Net.

If you have a concession card, you can apply for the PBS Safety Net when you spend $390.00. You’ll then get PBS medicines at no cost for the rest of the calendar year.

If you don’t have a concession card, you need to spend $1,550.70 on PBS medicines before you can apply. You’ll then get PBS medicines at a discounted rate for the rest of the calendar year.

The amount you have to spend on PBS medicines to get the PBS Safety Net changes each year.

It’s easy to keep track of how much you spend on PBS medicines. If you use the same pharmacy, you can ask them to keep track of how much you spend.

If you use more than 1 pharmacy, you need to:

  1. Download and print the PBS/RPBS Safety Net prescription record and application for a Safety Net card form.
  2. Complete page 1.
  3. Ask your pharmacist to record your PBS medicines on page 2 each time you visit.

You can also combine your family’s PBS medicine costs. You may be eligible for the PBS Safety Net sooner if you do this. Talk to your pharmacist for more information.
