New requirements if you get Parenting Payment

From 1 July 2018 you may need to take part in the ParentsNext program.

ParentsNext connects you to local support services to help you plan for your future. A ParentsNext provider will help you set up and achieve family, study and employment goals.

You may have to take part if you have:

  • been getting Parenting Payment for at least 6 months
  • not earnt any income from work for at least 6 months, and
  • a child under 6

If you need to take part, we’ll let you know.

The program is already in 10 local government areas and has helped more than 16,000 parents. It’s now expanding across the country.

The program won’t be available in:

  • most remote areas, and
  • Norfolk Island

Next steps

You don’t need to do anything now. If you have to take part, we’ll send you a letter asking you to attend an appointment with us. At the appointment, we’ll connect you with a ParentsNext provider in your area.
