Understanding your balancing outcome

After we balance your family payments, we’ll let you know the outcome. Find out more about these.

news item

We’ve started balancing Family Tax Benefit (FTB) and Child Care Subsidy (CCS) for the 2018-19 financial year.

We do this to check we paid you the right amount. When we balance your FTB, we’ll also check if you’re eligible for any supplements. This includes the FTB Part A supplement, FTB Part B supplement and the Single Income Family supplement.

This is the first time we’re balancing CCS, so it may take us longer to do when compared to FTB.

What happens if you were underpaid during the year

If this happens, we’ll pay any outstanding amounts directly to you when we balance your payments. We call this a top up.

If you have an outstanding debt with us, we may recover it from your FTB top up and supplements. This may occur even if:

  • you’ve entered into a repayment arrangement with us
  • your outstanding debt isn’t a family assistance debt.

What happens if you were overpaid during the year

If this happens, you may owe us money. You’ll have to pay this back.

If you were overpaid CCS, the amount we withheld during the year will reduce the amount you owe.

We’ll recover overpayments of CCS and FTB from your future FTB payments including arrears, top ups and supplements. We can also recover these overpayments from tax refunds.

This may occur even if:

  • you’ve entered into a repayment arrangement with us
  • your outstanding debt isn’t a family assistance debt.

If there is an amount outstanding, you need to pay it back. You should do this by the due date in the letter. If you can’t pay the full amount, you can talk with us about your repayment options.

What happens next

Once we've balanced your payments, we’ll write to you and explain the outcome.

You don’t need to call us to check on the progress. Keep track by checking your:

  • myGov Inbox
  • Centrelink online account
  • Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.
