Is your child finishing school this year?

16 November 2017

If your child is about to complete year 12, your Family Tax Benefit (FTB) for that child will stop.

You need to make sure we have the correct education details for your child so we know when they are finishing. You can update these details using your Centrelink online account through myGov.

If your child completes year 12 or an equivalent qualification in November or December this year, you can continue to receive FTB for them until 31 December 2017. If they finished before November, your FTB will stop 28 days after their course ends.

If your child is planning to study, do an apprenticeship or look for work after they finish school, they may be eligible for Youth Allowance.

They can submit a claim for this up to 13 weeks before their course or activity starts. If your child starts receiving Youth Allowance before the end of this year, your FTB will stop. This is because you can’t receive FTB at the same time your child is receiving Youth Allowance.

Your child can choose to have Youth Allowance start after your FTB stops. To do this, they will need to choose 1 January as the start date in their online claim.
