Your Youth Allowance or Austudy payment can’t last forever

6 June 2018

We can only pay you for a set amount of time. We call this allowable time. Find out what this means for you.

Allowable time is how long you can get Youth Allowance or Austudy while you’re studying.

We base it on the minimum time it takes to finish the course you’re doing as a full time student.

If you take longer to finish your course, you may run out of allowable time.

You’ll want to avoid this because your student payment may stop, even if you haven’t finished your course.

Allowable time fast facts

  1. Deadlines – you need to finish your course within a set period of time.
  2. Timing – any study you’ve done for the course will still count in your allowable time. Even if you start your course before claiming a student payment. It doesn’t matter if you were getting a payment or not.
  3. Previous study – we may count this in your allowable time.
