Instructions on how to manage your Centrelink debt with your Centrelink online account.

You can no longer bring cash, cheques or money orders into Centrelink Service Centres to repay debts.

Step 1: get started

From your homepage, select the menu icon. Select Money You Owe, followed by Repay the Money You Owe.

Or, you can select My profile.

On your My profile page, select My finances.

Then select View money you owe details.

The Money You Owe summary page shows you:

  • the total outstanding amount
  • your next repayment amount, if you already have a payment arrangement in place
  • your next repayment due date
  • the debt number
  • the payment you were getting when the debt was raised
  • the total amount of the debt
  • the amount you’ve already paid
  • details of previous debts you’ve repaid

If you want to:

  • make a payment, go to Step 2
  • update your payment arrangement, go to Step 3
  • set up a new payment arrangement, go to Step 4

Step 2: make a payment

Select Make a payment.

If you need help, select the question mark icon.

Enter the Amount you would like to pay in dollars and cents, including the decimal point. You will also need to enter the Payment date. Select the calendar icon to do this.

Once you’ve done this, select Next.

Choose how you want to make a payment.

Select Credit or debit card to make a payment by card.

Select BPAY to make a payment directly from your Australian bank account. It may take up to 7 working days for your account to show any payments made by BPAY.

Select Post Billpay to make a payment at any Australia Post store with EFTPOS, cash, cheque or money order. You’ll need a Post Billpay barcode. Payments made with cash or card, will instantly update your record. Payments made with cheque or money order, may take up to 7 working days to process.

After you choose a payment option, select Next.

To go back to the previous page, select Cancel.

In this example, we’ll make a payment with Credit or debit card. Select Credit or debit card, then select Next.

On the Payment information page, enter the:

  • Payment amount
  • Cardholder name
  • Card number
  • Expiry date on the card, month and year
  • Security code (CCV), the 3 numbers on the back of the card

Select I confirm the payment details entered are correct to confirm the details you’ve entered are correct, then select Pay now.

We’ll give you a receipt to let you know your payment has been successful. Please make a note of the Receipt ID for your records.

Select:

  • Your payment information to see the amount you paid and the date you paid it
  • Your payment option to see how you made the payment
  • Your credit or debit card details to see the card details you entered
  • Return to home to go back to the Money You Owe summary page

This is the end of the process to make a payment. Go to Step 5 to sign out.

Step 3: update your payment arrangement

On the Money You Owe summary page, select Payment arrangement.

If you need help, select the question mark icon.

Choose how you want to make your repayment.

If you currently get a payment from us, select From your regular Centrelink payments.

If you don’t get a payment from us, select Other payment methods.

In this example, we’ll select From your regular Centrelink payments.

After you choose an arrangement type, select Next.

On this page, you’ll see your current deductions and the date they will end.

You can change your deduction amount. To do this, enter the Amount you would like to pay in dollars and cents, including the decimal point. Select Calculate.

If we can’t approve the amount you entered, you’ll need to submit a higher one. If you can’t make a higher repayment, call us to work out an amount you can manage.

Select Back to go back to the previous screen or Cancel if you want to start again.

If we approve the amount you entered, make sure the details of Your new deduction arrangement are correct.

Select Reset to change the amount you want to pay.

If the details are correct, select Next.

We’ll give you a summary of the information you’ve told us. Make sure the details of Your deduction arrangement are correct.  

You have options at this stage, you can select:

  • Update if you need to change these details
  • Back to go back to the previous page
  • Cancel if you no longer want to update your payment arrangement details or you want to start again

If the details are correct, read the declaration. If you understand and agree with the declaration, select I accept the declaration, then select Submit.

We’ll give you a receipt to let you know your new payment arrangement has been successfully adjusted.

Select:

  • the printer icon if you want a copy of the receipt
  • Outcomes to view a summary of your new payment arrangement
  • Information you provided to view your new repayment amount and repayment end date

Select Return to home to go back to the Money You Owe summary page.

This is the end of the process to update your payment arrangement. Go to Step 5 to sign out.

Step 4: set up a new payment arrangement

On the Money You Owe summary page, select Payment arrangement.

If you need help, select the question mark icon.

Choose how you want to make your repayment.

If you currently get a payment from us, select From your regular Centrelink payments.

If you don’t get a payment from us, select Other payment methods.

In this example, we’ll select the Other payment methods option.

After you choose an arrangement type, select Next.

On the Payment Arrangement page:

  • enter the Amount you would like to pay
  • select the drop down box and choose the Frequency you want to make repayments  
  • select the calendar icon and enter the Start date you want your new payment arrangement to start

Once you’ve entered these details, select Calculate.

If we can’t approve the amount you entered, you’ll need to submit a higher one. If you can’t make a higher repayment, call us to work out an amount you can manage.

Select Back to go back to the previous screen or Cancel if you want to start again.

If we approve the amount you entered, make sure the details of Your payment arrangement are correct.

Select Reset to change the amount you want to pay.

If the details are correct, select Next.

You can choose how you want to make your repayments.

Your options include:

  • Credit or debit card to make your repayments by card
  • Direct Debit to transfer your repayments to us from your Australian bank account
  • BPAY to make your repayments directly from your Australian bank account. It may take up to 7 working days for your account to show any payments made by BPAY
  • Post Billpay to make your repayments at any Australia Post store with EFTPOS, cash, cheque or money order. You’ll need a Post Billpay barcode. Payments made with cash or card, will instantly update your record. Payments made with cheque or money order, may take up to 7 working days to process

After you choose a payment option, select Next.

To go back to the previous page, select Cancel.

In this example, we’ll set up repayments with Direct Debit.

Select Direct Debit, then select Next.

Enter your Australian Bank account details including your:

  • Account name
  • BSB
  • Account number

Once you’ve entered these details, select Next.

On the Review and submit page, make sure all the information is correct for:

  • Your payment arrangement
  • Your payment option
  • Your direct debit details

If the details are incorrect, you can select:

  • Update if you need to change any of these details
  • Back to go back to the previous page
  • Cancel if you don’t want to update your payment arrangement details, or you want to start again

If all of the details are correct, read the declaration. If you understand and agree with the declaration, select I accept the declaration, then select Submit.

We’ll give you a receipt to let you know your new payment arrangement has been set up successfully.

Select:

  • the printer icon if you want a copy of the receipt
  • Your repayment arrangement to view your new repayment details
  • Your payment option to view how your repayments are being made
  • Your direct debit details to view the account details you told us about

Select Return to home to go back to the Money You Owe summary page.

This is the end of the process to set up a new payment arrangement. Go to Step 5 to sign out.

Step 5: sign out

From your homepage, you can complete other transactions or select the myGov icon to return to myGov.

For your privacy and security, sign out when you have finished using your myGov account.

If you didn’t sign in from my.gov.au, select Logout
