Centrelink online account help - request to transfer carer payments for a child to an adult

Instructions on how to request to transfer Carer Payment and Carer Allowance from a child to an adult care receiver with your Centrelink online account.

If you are getting Carer Payment, Carer Allowance or both and your payments are current, we’ll send you a letter when the child you provide care for reaches:

  • 15 years and 9 months of age, or
  • if your child has a terminal illness, 17 years and 9 months of age

The letter will let you know when the payments for the child you provide care for will stop.

Read more about when the child you care for is going to turn 16.

Step 1: get started

Select Child to Adult Transfer from the Tasks tile on your homepage.

Or, go to the MENU, select Carers, and then Child to Adult Transfer.

If you get your Centrelink letters in your myGov Inbox, you can also go to myGov and select the link we sent to your myGov Inbox.

Step 2: tell us about residence details and care arrangements

In each section we’ll ask you questions to confirm your eligibility for a transfer.

We’ll give you a transfer number. Use this if you need to follow up with us over the phone or in person at a service centre.
To begin, select Get started in Confirm residence details and care arrangements.

The next screen will display 2 tabs. On the Residence tab, answer all the questions about the child you care for.

Once you’ve done this, select Next to move to the Care Arrangements tab.

On the Care Arrangements tab we’ll ask you questions about the person you provide care for. Answer all of these questions, then select Next.

You will return to the child to adult transfer main page.

If you need to make changes, select Edit in Confirm residence details and care arrangements.

If you need help with any of the questions, select Help.

If you want to complete your transfer request later, select Save and Exit at any time to return to your Centrelink online account homepage.

Step 3: tell us about care needs

In most cases the next section on your screen will be Tell us about their day to day care needs.

If the child you provide care for has a terminal condition, you do not need to complete step 3 or step 4. Go to Step 5 to review your transfer.

To begin, select Get started in Tell us about their day to day care needs.

In this section we’ll ask you questions about the help you provide to the person you care for on a day to day basis. This help must relate to their disability or medical condition. Answer all the questions and select Next.

You will return to the child to adult transfer main page.

If you need to make changes, select Edit in Tell us about their day to day care needs.

If you need help with any of the questions, select Help.

Step 4: tell us about cognitive function and behaviour

In most cases the next section on your screen will be Tell us about their cognitive function and behaviour. If the child you provide care for has a terminal condition you do not need to complete step 4. Go to Step 5 to review your transfer.

To begin, select Get started in Tell us about their cognitive function and behaviour.

The next screen will display 2 tabs. On the Cognitive Function tab, answer all the questions about help you give the person you provide care for.

Once you’ve done this, select Next to move to the Behaviour tab.

On the Behaviour tab we’ll ask you questions about the person you provide care for. Answer all of these questions, then select Next.

You will return to the child to adult transfer main page.

If you need to make changes, select Edit in Tell us about their cognitive function and behaviour.

If you need help with any of the questions, select Help.

Step 5: review your transfer

To begin, select Get started in Review your transfer and next steps.

Please carefully review your answers in each section. To view your answers, select the arrow icon. If you want to update any of the information, select Update to go back to the relevant section. If you make any updates, we may ask you to update other information. If all of the details are correct, select the declaration.

Read the Declaration. If you understand and agree with the declaration, select Confirm.

If all the details are correct and you have no further updates, check the Declaration checkbox, then select Next Steps.

Step 6: review next steps

On the Next steps page we’ll tell you what documents you need to give us and how to get them to us. To ensure there are no delays in payment:

  • upload required documents
  • submit your transfer request within the time period allowed

If you don’t submit your transfer within the time period allowed, you may be without payment while your transfer is being assessed.

Download and print the medical report. After your child’s treating health professional has filled out the form, you can upload it to your transfer request.

We’ll tell you if you need to give us identity documents or Proof of residence for you or the person you provide care for.

To upload your documents, select Upload next to the task you need to complete.

Once you do this, the select your documents screen will ask you to confirm which documents you are uploading before you submit them.

You will get a receipt number every time you submit any required documents.

When you submit your transfer request, you will move to the Receipt page. Make a note of your receipt details and select Return to Home to go back to your Centrelink online account.

If you prefer, you can take all the documents we ask for to your nearest service centre. Remember to quote your transfer number so the Service Officer you speak to can attach the documents to your transfer request. If you have completed all the tasks, the Service Officer will submit your request.

We will send you a letter when we have processed your request.

Step 7: sign out
