Centrelink online account help - update your family income estimate and payment choice - Online help

Ensuring your family income estimate is accurate and your payment choice is right for you will help ensure you don't get overpaid. Here's how to update both.

You’ll need to report changes in your income or earnings separately if you or your partner receive an income support payment such as:

  • Parenting Payment
  • Newstart Allowance, or
  • Disability Support Pension

Step 1: sign in

Sign in to myGov, select your Centrelink online account to access the menu and your home page.

Step 2: view your Family Income Estimate

From the Menu, select Family Assistance, then Update Family Income Estimate. This will take you to a page that will show your current income estimate.

If you have a partner, you’ll need to update their income estimate as well.

From April to June of each year, you can update your family income estimate for the next financial year. We will use this estimate for all of your family assistance payments. This includes Family Tax Benefit and Child Care Benefit.

Step 3: update your Family Income Estimate

Select Update Income.

Type your estimated income into the boxes. If something doesn’t apply to you, leave that box blank.

Alerts will appear at the top of the screen to help you.

If a figure you have typed doesn’t match our records, a red box will appear and let you know what you need to do.

If we need you to provide more details in the future, a yellow box will:

  • let you know what to do, and
  • when you need to do it

Scroll down and select Next.

Step 4: confirm update to Family Income Estimate

If your income has gone down, you need to tell us why. You can do this using the drop down menu.

Select Next.

This will take you to a page that will show an overview of your income estimate. It’s very important that you read through the changes and make sure everything is correct.

If all the details are correct, accept the declaration and select Submit.

If the update was successful, we’ll give you a receipt number and a summary of your entitlements.

Step 5: update payment choices

You can also update your payment choice to how and when you get paid. To avoid overpayment, we’ll recommend a payment choice for you.

Select here from the receipt screen to update your payment choice.

To update your payment choices, click on the tab you want to update and select the pencil icon.

Select your new payment choice under the Current Payment Choices tab and click save.

Step 6: confirm update to payment choices

Confirm your change. We may overpay you if you choose not to use our recommended payment choice. If you’re paid too much, you’ll have to pay any overpayments back. We’ll let you know if this happens.

Read the information and select Confirm to update your payment choice.

Select Next to review your changes.

Check the details are correct and accept the declaration. Select submit to update your payment choice.

We’ll give you a receipt number if the update was successful.

We’ll also provide you a summary of your entitlements.

When you’re done, select Finish and return to home page.

Step 7: sign out

From your home page, you can complete other transactions. Select Return to myGov to go to your myGov account.

For your privacy and security, sign out when you have finished using your myGov account.
