Centrelink online account help - Update your family income estimate and payment choice

Make sure your family income estimate is accurate and your payment choice is right for you. This will help ensure you don't get overpaid. Here's how to update both.

We use your family income estimate to work out how much family assistance you get. Read more about your family income estimate.

You also need to report changes in your income or earnings separately. You need to do this if you or your partner receive an income support payment such as:

 

Step 1: get started

From your homepage, select the MENU icon, followed by Family Assistance and Update Family Income Estimate.

This will take you to a page that shows your current family income estimate.

From April to June of each year, you can also update your family income estimate for the next financial year. Select the tab with the financial year you want to update.

Remember, updating your annual income estimate for Family Assistance does not update your income for income support payments. You must report separately for payments such as Parenting Payment, Newstart, Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment.

Step 2: update your Family Income Estimate

To update your income estimate, select Update Income.

If you have a partner, you’ll need to update their income estimate as well.

Type your estimated incomes into the boxes. If something doesn’t apply to you, leave that box as $0.

Alerts will appear at the top of the screen to help you.

Once you’ve entered your information, select Next.

If a figure you’ve entered doesn’t match our records, we’ll need you to provide more information. An information box will appear at the top of the screen. It lets you know what you need to do and when you need to do it by.

Select Next.

Step 3: confirm update to Family Income Estimate

If your income has gone down, you need to tell us why. You can do this using the drop down menu.

This will take you to a page that shows an overview of your income estimate. It’s important you read the changes and make sure everything is correct.

If all the details are correct, read the declaration. If you understand and accept the declaration select Submit.

If the update was successful, we’ll give you a receipt number and a summary of your entitlements.

Step 4: update payment choice

You can also update your payment choice for Family Tax Benefit. To avoid overpayment, we’ll recommend a payment choice for you based on your circumstances.

Select here from the receipt screen to update your payment choice.

Select the pencil icon next to the payment you want to update. Choose your new payment choice and select Save.

Step 5: confirm update to payment choices

Confirm your changes. We may overpay you if you choose not to use our recommended payment choice. If you’re paid too much, you’ll have to pay any overpayments back. We’ll let you know if this happens.

Read the information and select Confirm to update your payment choice.

Select Next to review your changes.

If all the details are correct, read the declaration. If you understand and accept the declaration select I declare that. Then Submit to update your payment choice.

We’ll give you a receipt to confirm your update has been successful. Please make note of the Receipt ID for your records.

We’ll also give you a summary of your entitlements.

Select Finish and return to home page to return to your online account homepage.

Step 6: sign out

From your homepage, you can complete other transactions or Return to myGov.

For your privacy and security, sign out when you've finished using your myGov account.

If you didn't sign in from my.gov.au, select Logout
