Start your claim
You can claim over the phone by calling us on our ABSTUDY students line.
When claiming over the phone you’ll need to confirm the information you’ve given us is true and correct. We’ll tell you if you need to provide documents to support your claim.
After the phone call, we’ll send you a Customer Declaration Form with the information you told us. If the information is right, you don’t need to return the form. If any of the information is wrong, you’ll need to return the form with the right information.
We can’t process claims for Lawful Custody Allowance or Testing and Assessment assistance over the phone. You’ll need to fill in the claim forms below.
If you can’t claim over the phone, you can fill in a claim form. Check which form you need to complete based on your circumstances or those of the person you're claiming for in the table below. Read the Information you need to know on the form before you fill it in.

When you claim, we might ask you to fill in extra forms. These help us assess your claim and understand your circumstances.
If we ask you for these, you need to submit them within 14 days. We also may ask you to confirm your identity.

Submit your claim form
To submit your claim, follow these steps.
- Check you’ve answered all questions.
- Sign and date the claim form.
- Attach any supporting documents.
- Submit your claim to us.

Submit your claim by the closing date
There are different closing dates for ABSTUDY claims, depending on your situation.
We can’t make ABSTUDY payments if we get your claim after the closing date.
If you couldn’t submit your claim on time because of an extreme circumstance, you must give proof of this.
Students claiming ABSTUDY
|Full year course - more than 30 weeks including vacations||31 December in the year of study|
|Part year or short course - 30 weeks or less including vacations||the last day of the course|
Students claiming ABSTUDY Pensioner Education Supplement (PES)
You need to submit your claim by the closing date to be paid from the start of your course. If you submit your claim after the closing date, we may still accept it. However we may only pay you from the date your claim was submitted.

Australian Apprentices claiming ABSTUDY
You must complete and submit your claim by the start date of your apprenticeship. If you submit your claim after your apprenticeship starts, we may still accept it. However, we may only pay you from the date your claim was submitted.
If a medical condition or special circumstances stop you from doing so, call us on our ABSTUDY students line.
Students or education providers claiming ABSTUDY Away from Base assistance

You have until 31 March in the year after study to claim a reimbursement for Away from Base assistance. However, you still need to apply for ABSTUDY before the closing date.
Students and Australian Apprentices in lawful custody
You must submit your claim with your receipts by 31 March in the year immediately after the year of study. This is so we can reimburse you for essential course costs.
Wait for the result
After we assess your claim, we'll send you a letter to let you know if you'll get ABSTUDY. If it was successful, the letter will tell you when your payment will start and how much it will be.
You can view, save and print your letters in your online account. You can also subscribe to electronic messaging to get notifications from us by SMS or email.
