Online claims

You can claim online if you’re a tertiary student or Australian Apprentice, and you’re claiming one of the following:

Phone claims

You can also claim ABSTUDY over the phone by calling us on our ABSTUDY line.

When claiming over the phone you’ll need to confirm the information you’ve given us is true and correct. We’ll tell you if you need to provide documents to support your claim.

After the phone call, we’ll send you a Customer Declaration Form with the information you told us. If the information is right, you don’t need to return the form. If any of the information is wrong, you’ll need to return the form with the right information.

You can’t lodge a claim for Lawful Custody Allowance or Testing and Assessment assistance over the phone. You’ll need to fill in the claim forms below.

If you can’t claim over the phone, you can fill in a claim form. Check which form you need to complete based on your circumstances or those of the person you're claiming for in the table below. Read the Information you need to know on the form before you fill it in.

Circumstances Form to complete

You're either a:

  • secondary student 15 or younger and living at home
  • primary school student 14 or older on 1 January that school year and living at home.
Claim for ABSTUDY Schooling A
Secondary school student from a remote area who needs to live away from home for school. Claim for ABSTUDY Remote Areas

You're any of the following:

  • a student 16 or older
  • an independent student 15 or older
  • a student in state care
  • a student 15 or younger and living away from home
  • an Australian Apprentice.
Claim for ABSTUDY
Student who gets a Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs qualifying pension or payment. Claim for ABSTUDY Pensioner Education Supplement

You're any of the following:

  • a part time student
  • a full time student or Australian Apprentice who only wants to claim Incidentals Allowance
  • attending tests or assessments for entry into a tertiary course or the Indigenous Youth Mobility Program.

When you claim, we might ask you to fill in extra forms. These help us assess your claim and understand your circumstances.

If we ask you for these, you need to submit them within 14 days. We also may ask you to confirm your identity.

Submit your claim form

To submit your claim, follow these steps.

  1. Check you’ve answered all questions.
  2. Sign and date the claim form.
  3. Attach any supporting documents.
  4. Submit your claim to us.

You can submit your claim form in 1 of the following ways:

Submit your claim by the closing date

There are different closing dates for ABSTUDY claims, depending on your situation.

We can’t make ABSTUDY payments if we get your claim after the closing date.

If you couldn’t submit your claim on time because of an extreme circumstance, you must give proof of this.

Students claiming ABSTUDY

Circumstances Closing date
Full year course - more than 30 weeks including vacations. 31 December in the year of study.
Part year or short course - 30 weeks or less including vacations. the last day of the course.

Students claiming ABSTUDY Pensioner Education Supplement (PES)

You need to submit your claim by the closing date to be paid from the start of your course. If you submit your claim after the closing date, we may still accept it. However we may only pay you from the date your claim was submitted.

Circumstances Closing date
Full year course - more than 30 weeks including vacations. 31 March in the year of study.
Course that starts in second semester. 31 July in the year of study.
Course that is less than 1 year. 28 days after the date you start the course.
You start getting a qualifying pension or payment for ABSTUDY PES. 28 days after the date you start getting the payment.

Australian Apprentices claiming ABSTUDY

You must complete and submit your claim by the start date of your apprenticeship. If you submit your claim after your apprenticeship starts, we may still accept it. However, we may only pay you from the date your claim was submitted.

If a medical condition or special circumstances stop you from doing so, call us on our ABSTUDY line.

Students or education providers claiming ABSTUDY Away from Base assistance

Circumstances Closing date
Student requesting an advance payment of travel allowance. 3 weeks before the activity.
Student applying for reimbursement. 31 March in the year after study.
Education provider with approval in principal  applying for reimbursement. 31 March in the year after study.
Education provider requesting advance payment or approval in principal for reimbursement for eligible ABSTUDY students. 6 weeks before the activity.
Education provider requesting bulk funding in advance. 6 weeks before the first residential school day of the year.

You have until 31 March in the year after study to claim a reimbursement for Away from Base assistance. But you'll have a different closing date for your ABSTUDY claim.

Students and Australian Apprentices in lawful custody

You must submit your claim with your receipts by 31 March in the year immediately after the year of study. This is so we can reimburse you for essential course costs.

Wait for the result

After we assess your claim, we'll send you a letter to let you know if you'll get ABSTUDY. If it was successful, the letter will tell you when your payment will start and how much it will be.

You can view, save and print your letters in your online account. You can also subscribe to electronic messaging to get notifications from us by SMS or email.
