Electronic messaging

A service that lets you get important text messages or emails from us. You don’t need an online account for this.

You need to know

Eligibility

You can use this service if:

  • you have:
    • an Australian mobile phone number or,
    • a valid email address
  • you haven’t asked for only some staff to have access to your records

You don’t need to have an online account to use this service.

If you live overseas

If you live overseas you can still access this service. We can’t send you text messages, but we can send you emails. Make sure your email address is up to date.

Terms and conditions

If you give us your mobile number or email address, you may get electronic messages from us. We may do this instead of sending a letter.

What we can message you about

We’ll only send messages that matter to you. For example, we may:

  • ask or remind you to:
    • attend appointments
    • provide documents
  • let you know about:
    • our decisions
    • payments we’ve made
  • confirm that you’ve changed your details
  • send new information about payments and services

Replies

We don’t monitor this service. You shouldn’t reply to any of our electronic messages.

You may need to take some action if the message asks you to.

Privacy and security

We never:

  • ask you for your password or PIN
  • send you messages that include:
    • your name
    • your contact details
    • links to any website

Keep your details up to date

You may miss important messages that affect your payment.

Please tell us straight away if you change your mobile number or email address. We consider you have received a message once we send it to the mobile number or email address on your record.

If you change your mind

You can unsubscribe from this service at any time.

Service changes

We can change these terms and conditions without notice.

Incorrect messages

Contact us on your regular payment line straight away if you get a message that isn’t relevant to you.

Subscribe

Subscribe to get important text messages or emails from us, or tell us that you no longer want to get them.

There are 2 ways to start getting electronic messages.

You will be automatically subscribed when you give us a new mobile number or email address or you can subscribe online.

If you don’t want to use this service, you can unsubscribe at any time.

Subscribe automatically

You will be automatically subscribed when you:

  • update your mobile number or email address with us
  • apply for a payment or service and give us your mobile number or email address

If you give us your:

  • email address, we will email you
  • mobile number, we will send you text messages
  • email address and a mobile number but don’t tell us which one you prefer, we will only send you a text message

Subscribe online

  1. Sign in to your Centrelink online account through myGov
  2. Select Electronic Messaging and Letters from the menu and follow the prompts

We’ll send a text message or email to say you’ve subscribed.

Change your preferences

You can also subscribe or change your electronic messaging preference:

Unsubscribe

If you don't want messages from us, you can unsubscribe at any time.

You can do this:

Unsubscribe online

  1. Sign in to your Centrelink online account through myGov
  2. Select Electronic Messaging and Letters from the menu and follow the prompts

Unsubscribe by phone

You can do this at any time by calling us on your regular payment line or by using our free self service line.

  1. Call the free self service line 1800 199 575
  2. Enter your 9 digit Customer Access Number (CAN)
  3. Choose 1
  4. Wait for the confirmation message

Change how you get your messages

You can change how you get messages from us at any time:

You can do this:

If you live overseas you can only get electronic messages by email.

Make the change online

  1. Sign in to your Centrelink online account through myGov
  2. Select Electronic Messaging and Letters from the menu
  3. Select Email or Mobile (SMS) to answer How would you like to receive electronic messages? and follow the prompts

We’ll send you a text message or email to confirm the change.

This will update your choice for all your Centrelink online account information.

Update your contact details

If you change your mobile number or email address, you need to tell us straight away.

You can do this:

  • online
  • through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app
  • at a service centre, or
  • by calling us on your regular payment line

Update your details online

To update your contact details online, sign in to your myGov account and select Account settings, then Update your details and follow the prompts.

You can also update your details using your Centrelink online account. To do this, follow the steps in our online guide.

Update your details in the app

  1. Log in to the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app
  2. Choose My contact
  3. Put in the new details
