Energy Supplement

An extra payment to help with energy costs if you get certain payments from us.

Who can receive it

You can receive Energy Supplement if you:

If you’re receiving Family Tax Benefit (FTB) or have a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) you might receive Energy Supplement. This depends on when you started receiving FTB or a CSHC.

If you became eligible for FTB Your Energy Supplement
from 20 March 2017 won't be paid
between 20 September 2016 and 19 March 2017 stopped on 20 March 2017
by 19 September 2016 will continue unless there’s a break in your eligibility for FTB
and receive an income support payment will continue to be paid with your income support payment. Energy Supplement paid with your FTB may stop. It depends when you started receiving FTB

Example - eligible for FTB at 19 September 2016

Robert received Energy Supplement with his FTB in June 2016.

His FTB was cancelled in December 2016. He claimed again in January 2017 and his payments started again. This includes Energy Supplement.

But because there was a break in his FTB eligibility, his Energy Supplement stopped on 20 March 2017.

If you claimed a CSHC Your Energy Supplement
from 20 March 2017 won't be paid
between 20 September 2016 and 19 March 2017 stopped on 20 March 2017
from 20 September 2016 within 6 weeks of your income support payment stopping and you were receiving an income support payment on 19 September 2016 will continue unless there's a break in your eligibility for CSHC
from 20 September 2016 after 6 weeks of your income support payment stopping stopped on 20 March 2017
by 19 September 2016 will continue unless there's a break in your eligibility for CSHC

Example - claiming a CSHC between 20 September 2016 and 19 March 2017

Sarah has received Energy Supplement with her CSHC since 21 September 2016.

Sarah’s Energy Supplement stopped on 20 March 2017. She kept her CSHC.

Example - moving from an income support payment to a CSHC

James received Energy Supplement with his Age Pension from 1 August 2016.

On 1 April 2017, he can’t receive Age Pension anymore. He can claim a CSHC. James claims a CSHC within 6 weeks of his Age Pension stopping.

James will receive Energy Supplement because he claimed a CSHC. This is because:

  • he was receiving the supplement with his Age Pension at 19 September 2016
  • he claimed a CSHC within 6 weeks after his Age Pension stopped

If James missed the 6 week deadline, he wouldn’t receive Energy Supplement with his CSHC.
