Energy Supplement

Who can get it

You need to get certain payments or services from us to get Energy Supplement.

You get Energy Supplement if you live in Australia and get either:

You might get Energy Supplement if you either:

If you get either of these 2 and an income support payment, you may not get Energy Supplement. This depends on when you started getting Family Tax Benefit or a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.

If you get Family Tax Benefit (FTB)

Not everyone who gets FTB can get Energy Supplement.

To see if you can get Energy Supplement we’ll check when you became eligible for FTB.

Date you became eligible for FTB Date we’ll pay your Energy Supplement
After 20 March 2017 We won't pay it.
Between 20 September 2016 and 19 March 2017 We stopped paying it on 20 March 2017.
On or before 19 September 2016 We’ll pay it w ith your regular FTB payment. It will continue unless there’s a break in your eligibility for FTB.

If you get FTB and an income support payment or ABSTUDY Living Allowance, your Energy Supplement may stop. This depends on when you started getting FTB .

Example when eligible for FTB on or before 19 September 2016

Robert became eligible for FTB on 15 June 2016 which meant he was also eligible for Energy Supplement.

His FTB was cancelled in July 2018 . He claimed FTB again in September  2018 and his payments started again. He didn’t get Energy Supplement again because there was a break in his FTB eligibility.

If you get a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC)

Not everyone who gets a CSHC can get Energy Supplement.

To see if you can get Energy Supplement we’ll check when you became eligible for a CSHC.

Date you became eligible for a CSHC Date we’ll pay your Energy Supplement
After 20 March 2017 We won't pay it
Between 20 September 2016 and 19 March 2017 We stopped paying it on 20 March 2017
Before 19 September 2016 It will continue unless there's a break in your eligibility for CSHC
Date you started being eligible Date we’ll pay your Energy Supplement
On or before 19 September 2016 We’ll pay it with your regular CSHC payment. It will continue unless there's a break in your eligibility for CSHC

If you get a CSHC you can get Energy Supplement if you also get either:

To keep getting your Energy Supplement if your income support payment or ABSTUDY Living Allowance stops, you must:

If you do this, you’ll keep getting Energy Supplement as long as you stay eligible for a CSHC.

Example when claiming a CSHC between 20 September 2016 and 19 March 2017

Sarah became eligible for a CSHC from 21 September 2016 which meant she was also eligible for Energy Supplement.

As of 20 March 2017 Sarah no longer gets Energy Supplement.  She can keep her CSHC.

Example when moving from an income support payment to a CSHC

James became eligible for Age Pension on 1 August 2016 which meant he was also eligible for Energy Supplement.

On 1 April 2017, he stopped being eligible for Age Pension but he’ s eligible to claim a CSHC. He put in a claim and was eligible for a CSHC within 6 weeks of his Age Pension stopping.

Because James claimed a CSHC within 6 weeks of his Age Pension stopping, he’ll continue to get Energy Supplement.

If James missed the 6 week deadline, he wouldn’t get Energy Supplement.
