Setting up online accounts

To claim Newstart Allowance online you need a Centrelink online account and a myGov account. You need to do 4 things to create your accounts and make a claim.

1. Get 3 documents to prove your identity

To get a Centrelink online account you’ll need to prove your identity at a service centre.

You'll need 3 original identity documents, not copies to prove your identity.

At least 1 of these documents must have a photo of you:

  • a document to confirm your birth in Australia or arrival in Australia
  • a primary document and a secondary document to show the use of your identity in the community

Check the full list of identity documents.

2. Go to a service centre to get a Centrelink online account

You must visit a service centre with your identity documents to get a Centrelink online account. We will create your account and give you a Customer Reference Number (CRN). You’ll need both of these to claim online.

A CRN is made up of 9 numbers, ending with a letter.

For example: 123 456 789 A

You may already have a CRN if you’ve made a Centrelink claim before.

Find your CRN

Your CRN will be on any letters or cards from Centrelink.

You can call us to find out your CRN. You’ll need to tell us your:

  • full name
  • date of birth
  • address - where we last sent you a letter or card

3. Create a myGov account

If you don’t already have a myGov account, you need to create one.

To create a myGov account you need your own email address.

Use our step by step guide on how to create a myGov account.

You can also call the myGov helpdesk.

4. Link your Centrelink online account to myGov

You need to link your Centrelink online account to your myGov account before you can claim Newstart.

To link accounts you need to sign into your myGov account and follow the linking steps. You'll need to use your usual sign in details for your Centrelink online account or get a Centrelink linking code.

Use our step by step guide on how to link your Centrelink and myGov accounts.

You can also call the myGov helpdesk.
