How to report and manage your payment
There are things you need to do while you’re getting Newstart, including looking for work.
You'll need to:
- report your income for the past 14 days every 2 weeks
- keep your commitments by doing the things you agreed to in your Job Plan
- tell us about any changes to your circumstances
- tell us if you move or you’re thinking about moving to a new area
- tell us if you’re going overseas.
If you don’t report every 2 weeks your payment will stop.
If you report late, your payment will be late.
If you don’t do the things in your Job Plan we can reduce or stop your payments.
You may even end up with a debt you will need to repay.

Report your income
Every 2 weeks you need to tell us what you and your partner earned in the last 14 days.
You must report even if you didn’t earn anything.
We’ll tell you which dates you must report on.
You can report:
- through your online Centrelink account
- using the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app
- by calling 133 276 (13 EARN)
- at a service centre.

Follow your Job Plan
When you go on Newstart you make a Job Plan with us or with your employment services provider.
Your Job Plan sets out the things you agree to do. It gives you the best chance of getting a job. The plan can include applying for jobs, training or studying.
When you report your income every 2 weeks you also confirm you’re doing what your Job Plan says.
Your employment services provider will tell us if you haven’t done what your Job Plan says.
Employment Services Assessments
Talk to your provider if you’re finding it hard to do the things in your Job Plan.
You may need to go to an Employment Services Assessment. This assessment helps us understand:
- your barriers to work
- your capacity to work due to disability, illness or injury
- the best employment services program to suit you, if needed.
How much you or your partner earn affects your payment. We need to know what you and your partner earn so we pay you the right amount.
If you’re a member of a couple, it can affect what payments you can get and your payment rate.
You may be able to cancel your own payment online. This means you don’t need to visit a service centre or call us. Cancelling your payment is fast and easy and helps you avoid a debt.

We need to know about changes that could reduce or stop your payment.
You can’t get Newstart Allowance if you’re over Age Pension age.
An assessment of the impact of your disability, illness, injury or other barriers to work.
If you move to an area with less jobs, a 26 week non-payment period may apply.
