Pension Supplement

A regular extra payment to help with bills and medicine costs if you get income support from us.

Eligibility & payment rates


Pension Supplement is a combination of:

  • Pharmaceutical Allowance
  • Utilities Allowance
  • GST Supplement
  • Telephone Allowance equal to the higher rate for internet subscribers

Who can get it

There are 3 ways to get the supplement.

Option 1

You can get the supplement if you get:

Option 2

You can get the supplement if you are over age pension age and get:

Option 3

You can get the basic amount of supplement if you’re under age pension age and get Parenting Payment as a single parent.

How you get it

You don’t need to do anything. We’ll pay you each fortnight with your support payment.

If you can’t get it

If you can’t get Pension Supplement, you could get:

Transitional rate pensioners

If you get a transitional rate of pension you will not get the Pension Supplement. You will get an equivalent amount.

How much you get

If you are: Your minimum supplement per fortnight is: Your maximum supplement per fortnight is:
single $35.70 $66.30
in a couple $26.90 each or $53.80 combined $50.00 each or $100.00 combined
in a couple, separated due to illness, respite or prison $35.70 each $66.30 each

This is a guide only.

Payments every quarter

We can pay you your minimum Pension Supplement quarterly. This amount builds up daily during the quarter.

Call us on your regular payment number if you would like to get your supplement quarterly.

We’ll pay you each quarter after:

  • 20 March
  • 20 June
  • 20 September, and
  • 20 December

If we cancel your support payment before these dates we’ll pay you what’s owed straight away.

You’re not locked into quarterly payments and can change your mind at any time.

Updating payment rates

We update payment rates for the Pension Supplement each year on:

  • 20 March
  • 20 September

Sometimes CPI will affect your payments.

What could impact your payment

If you get a reduced support payment, you’ll still get the supplement.

Leaving Australia

If you’re travelling overseas or plan to live outside Australia, your payment may change.

Managing your payment

Cancelled payments

If we cancel your support payment, the supplement will stop from the same date.

Payments every quarter

If we cancel your support payment and you get the minimum supplement quarterly, we’ll pay you straight away.

While travelling outside Australia
