Annual parental income test reassessment
If you're dependent and get Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY, we may need your parents’ or guardians’ income details each year.
What the reassessment is
The annual parental income test reassessment is a review of your parents’ or guardians’ income. We use these details to make sure we pay you the correct amount if you’re dependent and get:

What details we need
If we need your parents’ or guardians’ details, we'll send you a letter. You’ll get it in September or October. The letter will tell you when we need these details by.
In the letter, we’ll ask for your parents’ or guardians’:
- income details for certain financial years, or
- income estimate, if they haven’t lodged a tax return for the financial years requested
If your parents or guardians use an income estimate, we’ll need a copy of their Notice of Assessment. They’ll get their Notice of Assessment after their tax return has been lodged. You can submit this document online.
If we don’t get your parents’ or guardians’ details by the due date in your letter, we’ll stop your payment.
If you or your parents or guardians have had a change of circumstances, you need to let us know. If you don’t tell us about changes, you may need to pay back money we’ve paid you.
How to complete the annual reassessment
The easiest way to complete the reassessment is to get your parents or guardians to follow the instructions below.
Instructions for parents and guardians
If your child got a letter asking for your income details, you can give them to us using:
You’ll need your:
- income details
- One Time Access Code (OTAC) in the letter we sent your child
- child’s Customer Reference Number (CRN), and
- child’s name and date of birth
Your income includes:
- combined taxable income
- tax free pensions and benefits
- fringe benefits
- income from outside Australia
- reportable superannuation contributions, and
- net investment losses, including negative gearing for property and shares
If you’ve paid maintenance during the last financial year, we’ll deduct the amount you paid from your parental income.
One Time Access Code
The letter we send your child will include an OTAC. When you do the reassessment online, the OTAC connects your information to your child.
You can still do the reassessment without an OTAC, but you’ll have to give us more details. You’ll need to give us your child’s full name, date of birth and CRN. It’s important you enter your child’s name exactly as it appears on the letter we sent them.
To do the reassessment using myGov
- Sign in to myGov.
- Select Centrelink.
- Select Income and Assets from the menu, then select Advise Parental Income.
- On the Advise Parental Income screen, select using a One Time Access Code (OTAC) printed on a letter sent to your child or their nominee, then select Next.
- Select Get started.
- Select Yes if you have an One Time Access Code or No if you don’t.
- Complete the questions.
If you don’t have a myGov account, go to the Advise Parental Income online service and follow steps 4 - 7 above.
What happens after the reassessment
If the reassessment shows that your parents’ or guardians’ income has gone up:
- more than 25% in a year, we may reduce your payment from 1 October of that year
- 25% or less, we may reduce your payment from 1 January the next year
