Submit a Medicare claim online

You can submit a claim for Medicare benefits using your Medicare online account or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app.

You need to give us a copy of your receipt or account when submitting your Medicare claim online.

How to submit a claim

The quickest and easiest way to claim your Medicare benefit is at your doctor's practice. Ask if they can do this for you. If your doctor doesn't offer electronic claiming, you can claim your Medicare benefit using:

Who you can make an online claim for

You can submit claims for anyone listed on your Medicare card.

What you can't claim using your Medicare online account

You can't claim online if the item is for a service provided:

  • to someone who isn't on your Medicare card
  • more than 2 years ago

You don’t need to claim if the service was bulk billed or your doctor’s practice submitted it on your behalf.

What you need before you start

You’ll need to upload a copy of your receipt to support your claim. If you don’t provide a receipt, we can’t accept your claim.

If you use your Medicare online account, save a copy of your receipt to your computer before you start your claim. You can upload receipts in these formats:

  • PDF
  • BMP
  • GIF
  • PNG
  • JPG

If you use the Express Plus Medicare mobile app, you can use the camera on your device to upload a photo.

Make sure you don’t upload more than 10 files for each claim. Also check the total size of all files uploaded is smaller than 5 MB. Otherwise, the upload won’t work.

Where to find item numbers

Item numbers are 1 to 5 digits. You can find these on your doctor’s receipt or account.

How to get paid

You need to register your bank account details with us to get your benefit. You can register or update these details using your Medicare online account or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app.

If you've submitted your claim and realise you made a mistake, call the Medicare general enquiries line. You can’t cancel or delete a claim yourself.
