How to enrol your child in Medicare if they were born overseas

You can enrol your overseas born baby in Medicare if you’re an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

If your baby was born overseas, you can enrol them in Medicare if either:

  • you’re an Australian citizen
  • you are or have applied to be a permanent resident of Australia.

Keep in mind, you can’t enrol them online.

When you’re an Australian citizen

If your child enters Australia on a foreign passport, they can enrol if they both:

  • have Australian citizenship
  • came to Australia to live.

They’re eligible for Medicare on the date they arrive.

If you apply for Australian citizenship for your child, they’re eligible on the date they become a citizen.

If your child has an Australian passport, they can enrol if they’ve entered Australia to live. They’re eligible for Medicare on the date they arrive.

Enrolling your child

If you’ve been overseas less than 5 years, fill out a Medicare enrolment form for your child. You’ll also need to provide all of these documents:

  • your child’s foreign passport
  • your child’s Australian citizenship certificate
  • your child’s birth certificate.

If you’ve been overseas more than 5 years, you’ll need to both:

  • register yourself for Medicare again
  • enrol your child in Medicare.

Fill out 2 Medicare enrolment forms, 1 for you and 1 for your child.

You’ll need to submit the enrolment forms and documents at a service centre.

When you’re an Australian permanent resident

You’ll need to apply for your child to be a permanent resident too. After this you can enrol them in Medicare.

Enrolling your child

If you’ve been overseas less than 1 year, fill out a Medicare enrolment form for your child. You’ll also need to provide all of these documents:

  • their passport
  • their visa and proof of application for permanent residency
  • their birth certificate.

If you’ve been overseas more than 1 year, you’ll also need to provide both:

  • 2 documents proving you live in Australia now
  • proof that you’re still eligible for Medicare yourself.

Documents must be original or certified copies.

When you’re applying for permanent residency

If your child was born overseas after you applied, you’ll need to apply for their permanent residency too. After this you can enrol them in Medicare.

Enrolling your child

Fill out a Medicare enrolment form for your child. You’ll need to provide all of these documents:

  • your child’s passport
  • your child’s visa
  • your child’s proof of application for permanent residency
  • your child’s birth certificate.

You’ll need to submit the enrolment form and documents at a service centre.
