Adult Migrant English Program

Access to free English language courses to help you settle in Australia.

If you are eligible, you can get up to 510 hours of free English language education.

Who can join

Depending on your age, you may be able to join the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).

If you are 18 or over, you can join if both of the following apply:

  • you speak little or no English
  • you are a permanent resident or hold an eligible temporary visa.

If you are 15 to 17 you may be able to join, even if you go to school. Talk to an AMEP provider to find out.

If you are under 15, you cannot join this program.

You can find a list of eligible temporary visas on the Department of Education and Training website.

How long you have

If you join the program there are time limits that apply. You will need to register, start and complete your course in these time limits. These apply from the latest of either:

  • your visa start date
  • the date you arrived in Australia.

Some time limits depend on how old you are.

If you are 18 or older you must:

  • register with an AMEP provider within 6 months
  • start your course within 12 months
  • complete your course within 5 years.

If you are 15 to 17 you must:
