When the person you provide care for is going to turn 16
When the person you provide care for is almost 16 you can request to transfer to Carer Payment and Carer Allowance for an adult.
When you can request a transfer
You can request a transfer when the person you provide care for turns 15 years and 9 months. If your child has a terminal illness, you can request a transfer when they turn 17 years and 9 months. Your Carer Payment or Carer Allowance or both must be current.
You don’t have to contact us. We’ll send you a letter when you can request a transfer.
If you don’t request a transfer by the due date, we'll stop your Carer Payment or Carer Allowance or both on that date. If you have a Carer Allowance Health Care Card only, it will stop on that date.
The assessment rules for child and adult care receivers are different. When we get your request, we'll assess if your payment is transferrable and send you a letter with the decision.
To find out if you could be eligible for Carer Payment or Carer Allowance or both for an adult, read more about payments for carers.
How to request a transfer
When you become eligible to request a transfer, we'll send you a letter telling you how to do this.
