In 2017–18 the department administered approximately $173.4 billion in payments, or around 38 per cent of government outlays.
The department reported an operating surplus of $174.9 million after adjustment for unfunded depreciation and amortisation expenses and the revaluation of assets. This represents a 4 per cent variance from the budgeted net cost of services of $4.8 billion.
The department is primarily funded through direct appropriation in the annual budget cycle. The department also receives service-related revenue from other Australian Government agencies and non-government entities under service arrangements.
In 2017–18 the department’s total income was $4,612.5 million, comprising $4,297.1 million in government appropriation and $315.4 million in own source revenue and gains.
