Description of Measure

This measure will establish a new temporary parent visa that allows parents with an approved family sponsor to be in Australia for up to five years. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection expects the new visa program to be available later in 2017, but this is dependent on when the amendment to the Act is passed by Parliament.

People affected by this measure will be able to renew their visa from outside Australia, to allow a cumulative stay of up to ten years.

These visa holders will be required to hold insurance from an Australian provider to cover health costs for the duration of their stay in Australia.  Additionally, visa holders will also be required to pay for any public health debt they incur, with their sponsor being legally liable for any outstanding debts.
