Better Alignment of Student Payments - Budget 2017-18

This measure will improve consistency across Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses that are approved for different types of Commonwealth support.

Description of the measure

This measure will improve consistency across Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses that are approved for different types of Commonwealth support.

For student payment purposes, approval of tertiary VET courses, at diploma level or above, will be restricted to those tertiary VET courses and education providers that are approved for VET Student Loans.

This measure will direct student payments to VET courses that have a high national priority, meet industry needs, contribute to addressing skills shortages and align with strong employment outcomes.

Whom does this measure affect?

This measure affects students who receive:

  • Youth Allowance (student)
  • Austudy
  • ABSTUDY, and
  • Pensioner Education Supplement.

Note: Current students will be grandfathered unless there is a break in their payment entitlement.

What date will this measure start and finish?

This measure will start on 1 January 2018 and is ongoing.
