Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme

This Scheme reduces the cost of transporting eligible goods by sea between Tasmania and mainland Australia.

About the Scheme

The Scheme operates under Ministerial Directions and Guidelines issued by the Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development.

The Department of Human Services administers the Scheme, on behalf of the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development. There are 3 categories that you can apply for:

  • northbound goods
  • southbound goods, covering 2 sub categories:
    • manufacturing and mining
    • primary production
  • Intrastate - King Island and the Furneaux Group

In addition, you may be eligible for assistance if you belong to 1 or more of the following special categories:

  • sportspeople
  • professional entertainers
  • broodmares

Northbound goods under the TFES

The northbound component of the Scheme applies to eligible goods produced or manufactured in Tasmania for permanent use or sale on the Australian mainland.

Southbound goods under the TFES

The Southbound component of the scheme applies to persons or businesses engaged in manufacturing and mining, or in primary production. The eligibility criteria differ for the 2 sub categories.

Intrastate - King Island and the Furneaux Group under the TFES

The King Island and Furneaux Group intrastate component applies to intrastate sea freight shipped between King Island and the main island of Tasmania, and between Flinders Island and the main island of Tasmania.

Special categories for freight costs under the TFES

If you are a sportsperson or a professional entertainer, or are transporting brood mares, you may be eligible for freight assistance for transporting equipment.
