Help for those dealing with drug and alcohol misuse

20 December 2017

From 1 January 2018, there’ll be a change to help support people with drug or alcohol issues and to find work.

The new change may make it easier for people with drug and alcohol related issues to get support.

The change means drug and alcohol addiction treatments and interventions may now count towards Annual Activity Requirements as a job seeker.

This will let people focus on treatment and getting the help and support they need.

People having trouble meeting requirements because of a drug or alcohol related issue can talk with their provider about this.

Next steps

If you know anyone at risk, encourage them to get support. If you can, get them to see a doctor, other health professionals or a call a helpline.

Encourage them to go to the Counselling Online website to chat with a counsellor online. There are also state-based phone numbers if they’d prefer to speak with someone over the phone.
