What you need to know for Indigenous school students studying away from home

1 August 2018

They may be eligible for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance.

ABSTUDY Fares Allowance helps with the costs of travelling to go to school. It covers travelling to and from school each semester and for things like orientation or for compassionate reasons.

If you’re a boarding school or hostel, you can help students get the allowance. You can make a request with us to pre-book their travel.

To make a request, call our ABSTUDY Students line:

  • at least 7 days before the trip for 1 student, or
  • at least 6 weeks before the trip for 2 or more students

We’ll then book and pay for the most reasonable travel for the student or group.

The allowance helps make sure students start school on time. Their families won’t need to pay for the trip.

If students pay upfront for their travel, they can still get the allowance. They’ll just need to claim a reimbursement. To do this, they need to fill in an ABSTUDY Fares Allowance claim.
