If you’re a new health professional you need to register for an initial Medicare provider number.
This number confirms your health professional status and practice location. You can’t bill, refer, prescribe or request Medicare services until you have your provider number.
It’s important to apply early. We experience peak demand between December and April. The processing time for applications is up to 6 weeks. We process applications in the date order received to make it fair for everyone.
Make sure you provide your bank account details, supporting documents and current contact details when you apply. It saves delays.
There’s no need to call to check on your application. We’ll confirm your Medicare provider number by letter. You can also check our website for processing times.
If you already have a Medicare provider number, you can log on to HPOS to apply for more numbers or view your new number when it’s ready.
