Changes to PBS authority levels for proton pump inhibitors
9 May 2019
Authority levels have increased for PBS subsidised high and standard dose proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
You now need to get prior authority approval from us to prescribe High dose PPIs. You can get prior authority approval by calling our PBS authorities phone line or use the online PBS authorities in HPOS.
Standard dose proton pump inhibitors will need the prescription endorsed with a valid streamlined authority code (STREAMLINED).
As a prescriber, you must check if your patient is eligibile for the PBS. Also check the Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits to see if any restriction criteria apply.
Prescriptions written before 1 May 2019 are still valid for a PBS subsidy for the life of the prescription. Pharmacists will need to select the correct PBS item code when they dispense the medicine to the patient.
You can read more about this on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme website.
If you’re an approved supplier of PBS and RPBS medicines and claim for these online you’ll soon be able to get your payment faster.
We’ll pay your Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) Online payments in advance over Easter.
