How to prescribe PBS Streamlined Authority Items

24 April 2018

You don't need to get prior approval from us to prescribe Authority Required (STREAMLINED) items.

If you’re an approved prescriber you can prescribe many Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) subsidised medicines without needing to contact us first.

When prescribing Authority Required (STREAMLINED) items choose the streamlined authority code related to the patient’s condition and note it on the prescription.

There’s a list of streamlined codes on the PBS website.

You’ll need to get approval from us if your patient needs an increased quantity and/or increased repeats. The streamlined authority process doesn’t apply in these circumstances.

If you’re prescribing a streamlined item for a patient with a Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) card, you don’t need to contact DVA for approval.

Always check your patient meets the restriction criteria for the Authority Required (STREAMLINED) item before you prescribe it.
