Knee imaging item changes in the MBS for health professionals

From 1 November 2018 there will be changes to knee MRI, X-ray and CT MBS items.

From 1 November 2018 knee imaging Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items will change. Changes include:

  • The term knee will be removed from 8 existing item descriptions. This means you can’t bill the below items for knee imaging services you perform from 1 November 2018
    • X-ray items 56619, 56625, 56659 and 56665
    • CT items 57518, 57521, 57535 and 57536.
  • 8 new items will be introduced specifically for knee X-ray and CT services. These are
    • X-ray items 57522, 57523, 57537 and 57540
    • CT items 56620, 56626, 56660 and 56666.
  • Patient age eligibility will change to 16-49 for non-specialist referred MRI items 63560 and 63561. No more than three knee MRIs can be billed per patient in a 12 month period under these items.
  • Patients under 16 no longer need an X-ray service before the non-specialist referred MRI scan in item 63513 and 63514.
