MBS referrals and requests - your record keeping requirements

24 September 2018

There are new record keeping requirements in place for Medicare referrals, requests and plans.

From 1 July 2018, you must keep copies of referrals and requests for 2 years.

The 2-year period begins from the date you first provide an MBS service under the referral or request.

You also have to keep copies of any plans that are a requirement for an MBS item. This includes:

  • GP chronic disease management plans
  • GP mental health treatment plans
  • consultant physician treatment and management plans

The 2-year period begins from the date the health professional first prepares the plan.
