If you’re a graduating health professional you need to register for an initial Medicare provider number.
This number identifies you as a health professional at your practice location. You can’t start to bill, refer, prescribe or request services until you have your provider number.
It’s important to apply early. We experience peak demand between December and April. The processing time for applications is up to six weeks.
When you register for an initial Medicare provider number, it’s important you provide your bank account details, supporting documents and current contact details.
There’s no need to call to check on the progress of your application. Check our website for processing times.
When your application’s processed, we’ll confirm your Medicare provider number by letter.
