Thoracic medicine changes in the MBS for health professionals

From 1 November 2018 there will be changes MBS items for sleep studies and respiratory function tests.

On 1 November 2018 there will be changes to thoracic services in the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). You need to know about these changes if you bill for thoracic medicine services such as:

  • sleep studies
  • spirometry tests.

Sleep studies

The changes to sleep study MBS items aim to improve clinical practice by:

  • identifying eligible patients
  • clarifying the appropriate sleep study to perform.

The changes will apply to sleep studies performed on and after 1 November 2018 by qualified sleep medicine practitioners.

Spirometry and complex lung function tests

The changes include new and amended MBS items for spirometry and complex lung function tests when used for diagnosing:

  • asthma
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • other causes of airflow obstruction.
