Rural Procedural Grants Program

Provides financial assistance to procedural and emergency medicine general practitioners (GPs) who provide services in rural and remote areas.

The Rural Procedural Grants Program (RPGP) is jointly administered by

  • the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and
  • the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)

These colleges assess GP eligibility and training.

We maintain a register of eligible GPs and make payments to GPs on advice from the ACRRM and RACGP.

Eligibility

The RPGP has 2 components. It supports:

  • procedural GPs practising in surgery, anaesthetics or obstetrics in the Australian Standard Geographical Classification – Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA) 1 - 5 localities, and
  • GPs practising emergency medicine in ASGC-RA 2-5 localities

Procedural GPs in ASGC-RA 1 localities are subject to specific eligibility criteria.

If you provide services in rural and remote areas but live in urban areas (including locums and Royal Flying Doctor Service doctors) you may be eligible.

The Australian Standard Geographical Classification – Remoteness Areas (ASGC-RA) is the classification system used to define eligible areas. Urban localities are classified ASGC-RA1 and rural or remote localities eligible for locum placements are in AGGC-RA 2-5. Payment rates

All grant payments are calculated at a flat rate of $2,000 per day regardless of:

  • the cost of the course
  • travel and accommodation costs, or
  • charges relating to a locum

The procedural GP component provides a grant for up to 10 days of training, to a total of $20,000 per GP per financial year.

The emergency medicine GP component provides a grant for up to 3 days of training, to a total of $6,000 per GP per financial year.

Applying

Before you attend a course, you must register and lodge a claim for each component of the RPGP:

  • emergency
  • anaesthetics
  • obstetrics, and
  • surgery

Lodge your completed registration forms with either the ACRRM or the RACGP.

You will get a payment once we see evidence from either the ACRRM or the RACGP that you've completed eligible training and included relevant details.

Payments are made directly to your nominated bank account the next payment cycle. We forward a statement to you with details of each payment.
