The PBS subsidises modafinil and armodafinil for patients with narcolepsy.
For patients with narcolepsy, treatment with modafinil and armodafinil can be subsidised through the PBS under section 85 of the National Health Act 1953.
Modafinil and armodafinil are not PBS subsidised when used in combination with each other or with PBS subsidised dexamphetamine sulfate.
All applications for initial treatment must be made by a qualified sleep medicine practitioner or a neurologist.
Continuing treatment of narcolepsy, where the patient has previously been issued with an authority prescription for these medicines, can be requested by the patient's medical practitioner. Applications for continuing treatment may be requested by contacting the PBS Complex Drugs Programs enquiry line.
Patients must meet the relevant criteria as indicated in the restrictions and be eligible for the PBS.
