Electronic referrals and requests

Information about how you can transmit or store referrals or requests electronically.

Specialist referrals and diagnostic imaging and pathology requests can be electronically transmitted between third parties, provided the transmission meets the requirements of the Electronic Transactions Act 1999. Section 10 outlines the requirements relevant to electronic signatures.

The Health Insurance Act 1973 and related regulations don’t impose requirements on how or what type of electronic records can be transmitted between third parties or electronic signature standards.

Storage of electronic referrals or requests is the responsibility of the health professional and must be stored so they can be retrieved unaltered in the event of a future audit.
